The National Weather Service in Goodland has issued a
* Dust Storm Warning for...
Southern Dundy County in southwestern Nebraska...
Southern Hitchcock County in southwestern Nebraska...
* Until 730 PM MDT/830 PM CDT/.
* At 701 PM MDT/801 PM CDT/, a wall of dust was along a line
extending from 7 miles southwest of Haigler to 9 miles southeast of
Benkelman to near Atwood, moving north at 60 mph.
HAZARD...Less than a quarter mile visibility with damaging wind in
excess of 60 mph.
SOURCE...Public report of 1/4 mile visibility in blowing dust.
IMPACT...Dangerous life-threatening travel.
US 34 from the Nebraska state line to Trenton, NE.
Locations impacted include...
Benkelman, Trenton, Stratton, Haigler, Parks, and Max.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Dust storms lead to dangerous driving conditions with visibility
reduced to near zero. If driving, avoid dust storms if possible. If
caught in one, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your
foot off the brake.
If on or near Swanson Lake, get out of the water and move indoors or
inside a vehicle. Remember, lightning can strike out to 15 miles
from the parent thunderstorm. If you can hear thunder, you are close
enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter now! Do not
be caught on the water in a thunderstorm.
Strong to severe thunderstorms are also possible behind this wall of
dust. Keep updated with this quickly evolving situation.
