The National Weather Service in Newport has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Warning for...
  East central Jones County in eastern North Carolina...
  Eastern Craven County in eastern North Carolina...
  South central Beaufort County in eastern North Carolina...
  Pamlico County in eastern North Carolina...

* Until 615 PM EDT.

* At 535 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over River Bend,
  or near New Bern, moving east at 35 mph.

  HAZARD...70 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

  SOURCE...Law enforcement. This thunderstorm has a history of 
           producing tree damage in Vanceboro and Cove City.

  IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect considerable 
           tree damage. Wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, 
           roofs, and outbuildings.

* Locations impacted include...
  New Bern, Havelock, James City, Janeiro, Edward, Grantsboro, Royal,
  Riverdale, Olympia, Croatan, Maribel, Merritt, Neuse Forest, Cherry
  Branch Ferry Terminal, Fairfield Harbour, Minnesott Beach Ferry,
  Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, Bayboro, Alliance, and Arapahoe.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Remain alert for a possible tornado! Tornadoes can develop quickly
from severe thunderstorms. If you spot a tornado go at once into the
basement or small central room in a sturdy structure.

Prepare immediately for large hail and damaging winds. People outside
should move immediately to shelter inside a strong building. Stay
away from windows.

Please send your reports of hail and/or wind damage, including trees
or large limbs downed, by calling the National Weather Service office
in Newport at 1-800-889-6889.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts.

         producing tree damage in parts of Craven County.

IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

CENTRAL BEAUFORT AND PAMLICO COUNTIES WILL EXPIRE AT 615 PM EDT...

The storm which prompted the warning has weakened below severe
limits, and no longer poses an immediate threat to life or property.
Therefore, the warning will be allowed to expire.  However, gusty
winds and heavy rain are still possible with this thunderstorm.
